Fire Vehicle Replacement Project - Stage 3

With 47 million domestic and international passengers using Australian airports each year, Airservices must ensure its Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicle fleet is up to the job.

In the past three years, Airservices has purchased and commissioned 20 Mk8 Ultra Large Fire Vehicles (ULFV). Made in Austria by Rosenbauer at a cost of $24.4m, the new vehicles have been successfully introduced to service to replace ageing Mk5 and Mk6 vehicles.

The project also resulted in a change to the traditional colour of aviation fire fighting vehicles. Airservices now has an exemption from Civil Aviation Safety Regulations that state fire vehicle colours must be ‘signal red’.

The new vehicles are yellowish green – a colour found in international studies to be more visible in all light and weather conditions.
